Dr Sayyada Mawji, a London-based General Practitioner, is among the medalists for the Order of the British Empire 2023 for her services to health care during Covid-19.
Who is Dr Sayyada Mawji?
Dr Sayyada is the daughter of Murtaza & Munira Mawji and Daughter in law of Kamruddin and Zeenat Khaki.
She is an award-winning London-based General Practitioner, Aid worker and Senior Charity Lead. She is a compassionate doctor who is known for her patient-centred approach and has provided her assistance during many of the recent humanitarian disasters, establishing various international healthcare initiatives that continue to support many worldwide. She is also a media doctor and health advocate, providing a trusted voice to leading global media outlets and improving health awareness and engagement through her social media platform.
In a post published by Flo Health, Dr Sayyada commented on why she chose to pursue medicine. She said, “I chose to specialise in family medicine as I enjoy working with people of all ages — from children to the elderly — and the wide variety that my daily work offers… I am passionate about providing quality medical care to underserved communities and have worked in and established medical clinics and facilities in refugee camps in Iraq, Bangladesh, and Greece. In addition to my humanitarian work, I raise awareness about important health topics and educate the public via digital platforms. Over the last few years, I have become a trusted voice on medicine in the media and have contributed to well-known outlets, including the BBC, Women’s Health, the Metro, Daily Express, and Marie Claire. I’ve also worked with the NHS on public health campaigns and delivered a TEDx talk.”
During the Covid-19 pandemic, she worked with BBC news to create health content and videos in Gujarati and Urdu specifically to target misinformation and raise awareness in ethnic minority communities.
Dr Sayyada’s Career Highlights and Achievements
Dr Sayyada is a Media doctor, educator, and content creator for various media platforms, including BBC News, Marie Claire, and NHS health campaigns. She is a Health expert panelist for Women’s Health magazine and a member of the expert board at Flo Health.
In addition to her career as a GP, she is the International Head of Relief for the global non-profit organisation – Who Is Hussain, and a provider of humanitarian medical aid, medical education, and training, Doctors Worldwide, Stockport, UK.
She won the Professional Woman Award 2021 (Muslim Women Awards) and the Zenith Global Health Award. She was also a finalist for the Ibn Sina Award for Excellence in Health and has been named as one of nine female changemakers for online health advocacy work by Women’s Health, UK.
Medalist for the Order of the British Empire
Dr Sayyada has received the British Empire Medal for her tireless services to Healthcare during Covid-19. The British Empire Medal (BEM; formerly British Empire Medal for Meritorious Service) is a British and Commonwealth award for meritorious civil or military service worthy of recognition by the Crown.
