Khoja CFA is appointed as the Special Economic Advisor to the UK Prime Minister

Mr Shabbir Merali, a UK-based Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), has been appointed as the Special Economic Advisor to the newly appointed UK Prime Minister Liz Truss.

Who is Shabbir Merali?

Mr Shabbir Merali, a UK resident, is a qualified Chartered Accountant (ACA) and a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder. He is the nephew of Healthcare and Real Estate Entrepreneur Mr Abbas Merali, who has recently been elected as the Councillor for the Moor Park and Eastbury Ward in Three Rivers District Council.

Shabbir Merali’s Work Experience

Mr Shabbir’s comprehensive experience covers both – Public and the Private Sector, as he has been in the Economic field for a long time. He worked at PwC as a Senior Associate in the Banking and Capital Markets for around 4 years before he became the Economic Adviser to the Chief Secretary to the Treasury in 2018, where he specialised in public sector efficiency, emergent thinking on the role of the balance sheet for policymaking and advising on the trade-offs inherent in the Spending Review.

In 2019, Mr Shabbir became the Economic Adviser to the Secretary of State for International Trade, Ms Liz Truss and advised her across her policy portfolio. As per the University of Cambridge Centre for Science and Policy website, where he is a Policy Fellow, he has in particular, worked on the economic impacts of trade agreements, and the efficacy of policy interventions to improve competitiveness and boost exports and investment.

In 2021, he became the Economic Adviser to Ms Truss again when she was appointed as the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, also referred to as Foreign Secretary.

Appointment as the Special Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister

After her official appointment as the Prime Minister of UK this week, Ms Truss appointed a team of special advisors, including Mr Shabbir, who will join her at No 10 (10 Downing Street). Ms Truss brought along Mr Shabbir, who was previously at the Foreign Office, as she appointed him as the Special Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister.
