The Resident Aalim of Al-Abbas Centre (KSIMC of Birmingham), Shaykh Nuru Mohammed has been named as the Religious Advocate of the Year, at the British Muslim Awards 2024.
Who is Shaykh Nuru Mohammed?
Born in Ghana, Shaykh Nuru holds a BA in Islamic Philosophy and Mysticism from Al-Mustafa International University, and an MA in Islamic Studies from Middlesex University. He is currently the resident Aalim at the KSIMC of Birmingham (Al Abbas Islamic Centre), and the Lady Khadija Visiting Fellow in Shi’i Studies at the Woolf Institute, Cambridge.
Shaykh Nuru founded the Ummu ABEEHA Empowerment Centre in Kumasi, Ghana and co-founded the Imamiya Islamic Research Centre in Johannesburg. He is also a former visiting lecturer at the Tangaza University College in Nairobi, Kenya.
In addition to playing a significant role in the development of our Community, Sheikh has played an active role in the wider society, particularly in Birmingham where he resides. He is the co-chair of Citizens UK Birmingham and a Trustee of Citizens UK. He is a Governor at a local Secondary School and a member of the Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education in Birmingham. Sheikh is also a qualified civil and commercial Mediator and is the Chair of the Islamic Cultural and Religious Affairs (ICRA) of CoEJ.
What are the British Muslim Awards?
The British Muslim Awards, founded by Oceanic Consulting, is an annual ceremony that celebrates the accomplishments and contributions of Muslim individuals, groups, and businesses in Britain. It highlights the important role Muslims play in making Britain a better place. Established in 2013, the awards have been held every year since then. This year marked the 11th edition of the awards, featuring 36 different award categories.
Religious Advocate of the Year
Shaykh Nuru’s dedication to serving our community goes beyond his role as a Resident Aalim. He has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to addressing pressing issues and providing guidance during challenging times. His tireless efforts have played a crucial role in fostering unity and resilience within our community, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Award Ceremony for the British Muslim Awards took place on Friday, 10th May 2024 in Manchester, UK, where Shaykh Nuru was declared as the winner of the “Religious Advocate of the Year” category.
