Hundreds take part in Qur’an competition

A competition to foster knowledge and love of the Holy Qur’an takes place in Birmingham this weekend.

KSIMC Birmingham is hosting the second Lady Fizza Qur’an Competition (LFQC), from Friday 14 to Sunday 16 June.

Jamaats from the UK and Europe have entered, and organisers said: “We are really happy and excited, and look forward to welcoming participants from home and abroad.”

The event is being supported by both the World Federation and CoEJ, along with donor contributions.

Inculcating love of the Qur’an

Contestants aged five and above will compete in three categories to test their recitation of the Qur’an:

• hifz, where participants are given chapters to memorise and will be asked a selection on the day;
• tasfir, where participants are given 10-15 verses months in advance and asked about details of two of those verses;
• and open recitation, where participants will recite either given chapters or passages from anywhere in the Quran.

The objective of LFQC competitions is to bring awareness to the treasures of the Holy Qur’an and inculcate the love for it in children, youth and adults. There have been hundreds of applications, including from Birmingham, Leicester, London, Leeds, Wessex, Peterborough and Switzerland.

Very important competition

Organisers said: “We congratulate each one of you for taking the bold decision to participate in this very important competition. It is not about winning but the learning process and amount of knowledge that you will gain.”

Prizes will, however, be awarded at the closing ceremony on Sunday, and judges from the UK and abroad will gives marks for each recitation on the basis of accuracy, fluency, command of style, pronunciation and rules of Tajweed.

Inspired by AFED, the KSIMC of Birmingham held its first Lady Fizza Qur’an Competition in 2018. It was a huge success, with more than 70 participants. The weekend was inspirational and brought the whole community together.
