The Khoja community, and indeed the Urdu speaking Shia community mourns the loss of Dr Rehan Azmi; the world renowned Urdu poet of Ahlul Bayt (as). Marh left this world for the heavenly abode on 26th January 2021.

Dr Syed Rehan Abbas Rizvi was born in Karachi in 1958. He completed his PhD degree and went on to write poems, marsiyas and nauhas under the pen name Rehan Azmi, which gained prompt popularity among the people. As all his poems were under his pen name, accordingly, “Rehan Azmi” was the iconic name that all the Azadaraan e Husayn (AS) remember him by.

Dr Rehan collaborated with many nauha reciters. However, his most famous and most frequent collaboration was with Syed Nadeem Sarwar. The duo enjoyed much love and respect from the Shia community.

He has been a poet of the Ahlul Bayt (as) for more than 25 years. In 1997, he got into the Guinness Book of World Records for being the 7th speediest poetry writer in the world. He has published many books of poems, marsiyas and nauhas such as ‘Qalam Torr diya’, ‘Khuwab Se Tabeer Tak’, ‘Manzar Ba Manzar Karbala’, ‘Eik Aansoo mein Karbala’ among others in his career. Apart from writing poems, he also participated in poetry recitations and was often invited by Shia communities, world-wide.

His demise has left the Shia community with a blanket of grief. We offer our deepest condolences to our community members and pray to Allah (swt) to grant the Marhum maghfirat by the wasila of Imam Husayn (as), Ameen.
