Khoja Medical Professor Earns Top Alumni Award from Harvard

Dar-es-Salaam-based renowned Khoja Professor Karim Manji has been recognised with the highest honour, the “Alumni Award of Merit,” by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Who is Prof. Karim Manji?

Professor Karim Premji Manji is a Professor of Paediatrics and Child Health at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), with research specialisations in Infectious Diseases, Medical Ethics, Nutrition & Dietetics, and Paediatrics. He has achieved and maintained the highest standards as a research scientist, mentoring and nurturing the next generation of scientific academics. Prof. Manji has been actively involved in clinical work in the neonatal unit, published a comprehensive situation analysis of newborns, and championed efforts to reduce neonatal deaths in Tanzania.

In addition to his work at MUHAS, he is part of the Nest360 Program for newborn care and serves as a consultant for the WHO, conducting extensive research on newborn health.

What is Alumni Award of Merit

The Alumni Award of Merit, established in 1992 by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, is the highest honour bestowed by the Alumni Association. This prestigious award recognises distinguished alumni for their exceptional contributions to public health. To date, approximately 104 individuals have been honoured, with the majority hailing from the United States. However, the award also celebrates the achievements of alumni from around 12 diverse regions.

Professor Karim Manji was recognised with the highest honour, the “Alumni Award of Merit,” by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in September 2024.

This is not the first time Professor Karim Manji has been acknowledged for his contributions. In June 2024, he was honoured with the title of ‘Professor Emeritus’ by the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), Tanzania.
