The popular Annual British Beacon Mosque Awards is back with their selections for 2023. We couldn’t be more excited, as Al Abbas Islamic Centre (KSIMC of Birmingham) has once again been shortlisted as a finalist, this time in a new category!

Some of our readers may recall, but for those who are unaware, Al-Abbas Islamic Centre was previously nominated in three categories in 2021. These categories included “Most Impactful Imam” for Shaykh Nuru Mohamad, “Best Outreach Service” for Al Abbas Islamic Centre, and “Best Madrassah Service” for Muhammadi Madrassah. Alhamdulillah, we achieved victory in one category, with Shaykh Nuru Mohamad being honoured as the Most Impactful Imam of 2021.

The Annual British Beacon Mosque Awards

The Beacon Mosque Awards, started in 2018, are the 1st of its kind Mosque Awards in the world, celebrating the work of Islamic institutions in different categories.

The Beacon Mosque Project, an initiative of Faith Associates, has been developed to recognise that the role Mosques and Islamic Centres play in the macro infrastructure of towns and cities is being felt, and their impact on society’s social and cultural fabric is being measured. This initiative offers ratings to the Mosques against a set criterion to achieve a 3-star, 4-star or 5-star rating.  A 5-star rated Beacon Mosque truly serves both its congregation and the wider community, through an efficient, inclusive and sustainable provision of services.

This year marks the 6th year these awards are successfully running and has 11 categories for awards. These categories are – Best Run Mosque, Best Youth Service, Best Madrassah Service, Best Outreach Service, Best Women’s Service, Most Impactful Imam, Best Convert Support, Most Impactful Alimah, Most Innovative Service, Best Future Design and Best Mosque Volunteer Award.

Al-Abbas Islamic Centre’s Selection in the 2023 Awards

Al-Abbas Islamic Centre has been shortlisted as a finalist for the Best Future Design. This category, which was introduced in 2021, recognises Mosques who are in the process of developing new, innovative facilities and buildings for their place of worship. This includes Mosques that have recently been built or will be built in the near future, showcasing effective delivery of beauty, high-quality design and sustainability, and encompassing services outside prayer for the wider community.

Al-Abbas Islamic Centre is shortlisted in this category on the basis of the significant rebuilding project that the centre is going through, which will transform the centre into a modern and comprehensive complex that will cater to various aspects of the community’s needs.

There are 3 finalists for this category, including Al-Abbas Islamic Centre. Voting for all categories is open, and Al-Abbas Islamic Centre is currently in the 2nd position. However, just voting will not be the deciding factor. In addition to voting, the Judges’ assessment of the evidence of finalist’s work will be the main criteria for the selection of the winner. The winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony on 25th November 2023 at Werneth Suite Conference Hall in Greater Manchester, UK.
