A World Bank internship programme could offer exciting opportunities for young Khojas looking for a career with social impact. The Young Professionals Programme, which is based in Washington DC in the USA, prepares its interns for top technical and managerial roles at the World Bank Group, developing them professionally and enhancing their skills.
This unique opportunity is open to qualified, motivated individuals with previous experience in a diverse range of fields including education, agriculture and economics, and accepts around 45 applicants a year. These candidates will be offered a five-year renewable contract and spend 24 months in a development programme to help them thrive in their World Bank role, as well as enjoying other benefits.
Already, the Young Professionals Programme has hired and trained over 1,700 people, allowing them to reach their full career potential. Some of these past interns have even risen to vice president and managing director level at the World Bank!
What do applicants need, and what will they get in return?
In order to qualify for consideration, applicants should hold a PhD or Masters degree and relevant professional experience in a field suitable for the World Bank Group’s work, as well as being fluent in English and another language in which the World Bank works, such as Arabic, Chinese, French or Spanish.
Successful candidates will also demonstrate excellent client engagement and team leadership skills, as well as displaying a genuine passion and commitment for international development. In return, the World Bank invests in their interns’ careers with fieldwork opportunities, a comprehensive development curriculum to build key competencies, and continuous and personal coaching and mentor support throughout the five years.

The stringent assessment process takes a while to select the most promising applicants in their fields, so candidates need to plan in advance and apply this June/July for entry to the Young Professionals cohort in September 2020. Applications open on June 14th, and close on July 31st. Candidates are asked to submit a 1,000-word essay, explaining how they would contribute to the World Bank Group’s goal of ending extreme poverty and boosting shared prosperity, as well as demonstrating that they meet the minimum criteria for consideration by providing evidence of their academic achievements.
