Khoja volunteers in Florida have been showing their appreciation of those in the frontline of the fight against coronavirus – with pizza.

A team from Masjid Al Hayy and Husseini Islamic Center (HIC) in Orlando has been delivering pizzas to local Emergency Rooms, hospitals, fire stations, the police department, Sheriff’s Office and pharmacies.

“While the majority of us are able to self-isolate in the comfort of our own homes, there are many essential workers out there who are working as hard as they possibly can to ensure the health and safety of our community,” said organisers Sameer Jagani and Minaz Manekia.

“To all of our doctors, nurses, hospital staff, pharmacists, firefighters, police officers, truckers, grocers, and all you other amazing people out there, thank you for all of your hard work and sacrifice! We love you all and we certainly don’t deserve you!”

Incredible people

The team is encouraging Khoja community members to help “incredible people” involved in the battle against Covid-19, or others affected during this challenging time: “Please reach out to them and help them in any way you can even if it’s just to send them some good vibes. If you’re able to chip in with a group of friends and send some food or flowers, please don’t hesitate!

“At the very least, if you encounter any of these individuals, please, please be kind! Many of them are working 12-24 hour shifts and are putting all of their effort into making sure you’re taken care of. We’re all in this together and we certainly will make it out stronger!”

Generous donors

They reminded everyone helping others to observe social distancing.

Masjid Al Hayy and HIC also called for anyone in need of any assistance to get in touch.

The team’s next project will be to help stock Seminole County public school food pantries.

They thanked those donating to all their projects and appealed for ongoing help, saying:  “Massive shout out to our generous donors who contributed to this cause! We couldn’t have done it without you. Let us know if you can help.”
